Elin Eriksson and Åsa Johansen of Women in Tech Sweden celebrate the growing number of companies prioritizing equality and challenge the industry to continue pushing for a more inclusive future.

The Tech World’s Crossroads: Exclusion or Diversity?

Sweden’s commitment to diversity and equality shows that it is possible to combine social responsibility with business success. Let us continue to go against the current, write Elin Eriksson, Chair of the Board, Women in Tech Sweden and Åsa Johansen, CEO, Women in Tech Sweden.

Together we can show that the way forward is through courage and visionary leadership. We have a chance to make a difference – let’s take it, write Elin Eriksson, Chair of the Board, Women in Tech Sweden and Åsa Johansen, CEO, Women in Tech Sweden.

What is currently happening in the USA is worrying. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, which have previously been the backbone of many organizations’ progress and innovation, are being withdrawn. Diversity, which should be a given in all modern societies and companies, has suddenly started to be seen as something outdated. This is a development that threatens not only social progress, but also our ability to be competitive in an increasingly globalized and complex world.

But while the USA is taking steps backwards, Sweden stands strong. We have a business community that shows courage and forward-looking leadership. A clear example is that almost 40 companies have chosen to become annual partners with Women in Tech 2025. These companies have committed to actively working for diversity, inclusion and equality.

Through the partnership with the non-profit association Women in Tech Sweden Association, the companies have assumed a shared responsibility to create an inclusive and equal tech sector, where DEI will be an integrated part of the collaboration, “…to build a tech landscape that is inclusive, equitable, and empowering for all.”

This is not just words on paper. It is a commitment to educate themselves and their employees on DEI issues during the year and to actively work to implement policies and strategies that promote an inclusive environment.

Despite the challenges facing women in tech, reports show that there is a strong foundation to build on. As many as 93% of women in the tech industry* express a positive view of their jobs and are driven by creativity and intellectual stimulation. This optimism reflects the opportunities and progress that exist in an inclusive sector. Working in the tech industry means constantly facing intellectual challenges and the opportunity to solve complex problems. It is an industry that offers endless opportunities for creativity and innovation – being able to create the products and services of the future is not only stimulating but also incredibly meaningful.

This year’s partnership with Women in Tech Sweden is a strong indication of Sweden’s leadership in innovation and inclusion. The partnership shows that diversity is not just about social justice; it is about business development, innovation and crucial long-term competitiveness. Studies show that organizations with a high degree of diversity have better decision-making, greater creativity and higher profitability. It is about creating a workplace where everyone, regardless of background, feels valued and can contribute to their full potential.

We cannot sit back and believe that Sweden will automatically remain a pioneer. It takes courage, action and leadership. We are proud of the Swedish companies that stand up for diversity and inclusion, and hope that more will follow their example. We share the responsibility of creating a future that is both fair and successful; individuals as well as businesses, politicians and education.

Pendulum movements are a natural part of most development areas, but the fact that in 2025 we are once again facing the questioning of gender equality is surprising. It reminds us that progress is not permanent, and that we must be vigilant and continue to push these issues forward.

It is particularly worrying that several large tech companies, which were previously at the forefront of innovation and progress, now seem to be backing into the future. We are at a crucial crossroads, when the artificial intelligence being built will affect us in all areas of life – is it then time for the companies that create the products we use to turn their backs on the perspectives that come with diversity in the teams? Should we cling to outdated structures, or lead development towards a future characterized by innovation and inclusion?

Sweden’s choice to invest in diversity and equality shows that it is possible to combine social responsibility with business success. Let us continue to go against the current. Let us build a business community and a society where diversity is seen as a strength and inclusion as a given.

Together we can show that the way forward is through courage and visionary leadership. We have a chance to make a difference – let’s take it.
