Our Director, Åsa Johansen, recently joined Petra Barkeby from SEB and host Stefan Eng, on the Chat You Didn’t Know You Needed podcast to discuss how we can break barriers and foster a more inclusive tech industry. Read some of the nuggets:
In the conversation, Åsa emphasized the importance of showcasing diverse role models across all areas of tech. “It’s not just about coders; we need role models in product management, UX design, and data analysis,” Åsa shared. “By highlighting these varied roles, we make the tech industry more accessible to everyone.”
Åsa also discussed how small actions can lead to big changes. One such action is bringing a “plus one” to meetings and events. “If you’re attending a networking event or meeting, bring someone with you. It’s an easy way to expand your network and create organic support systems,” Åsa said. This simple gesture of inclusivity has the power to help women build valuable connections.
Both Åsa and Petra spoke about the vital difference between mentorship and sponsorship. “Mentorship is about giving advice; sponsorship is about opening doors and advocating for someone when they’re not in the room,” Åsa explained. By stepping up as a sponsor, you help pave the way for others to rise, especially in environments where they may not have the same opportunities.
In our continuous effort to support companies in their diversity, equity, and inclusion journeys, Women in Tech recently launched the DEI Compass. This self-assessment tool is designed to help organizations measure where they stand in terms of DEI and take actionable steps forward. As Åsa put it, “It’s time to stop checking boxes and start making real, measurable progress.”
These actions are part of Women in Tech’s ongoing commitment to driving change in the tech industry. We believe that creating networks, promoting role models, and advocating for actionable steps will ensure a more inclusive and innovative future.
