"An inclusive culture isn’t a trend. It’s your competitive advantage."

Åsa Johansen, recently was on the Tech Royale podcast with Robin Askelöv from HiQ. In case you missed it, we wanted to share some of the key insights Åsa shared about tech, diversity, and what the future holds for the industry.

Tech Isn’t Neutral—And Neither is Inclusion

Åsa reminded us that tech is shaped by people, and if those people don’t represent the diverse world around us, the products and services will inevitably fall short. Her message was clear:

“If your team doesn’t represent your users, you’re not just behind—you’re irrelevant.”

This really highlights why inclusion is no longer optional—it’s a necessity for staying competitive and innovative.

Women in Tech: Progress, but More to Be Done

The number of women considering leaving the tech industry has dropped from 40% to just 19%. While that’s a step in the right direction, Åsa made an important point—it’s not just about getting women into tech, it’s about keeping them there.

“We’re not just focused on getting women in—we’re focused on making them stay.”

This is a key takeaway for all of us who are working toward making tech a more welcoming place for women.

Role Models are Everywhere

We often think of role models as those who have reached the top of the corporate ladder, but Åsa reminded us that role models can be found at all levels.

“It’s not about the high-ups; it’s about the women around us who lift each other up.”

So let’s not forget: every woman in tech is making a difference, whether she’s just starting out or has been in the field for years.

The Future Is People in Tech

Åsa’s vision for the future is one where we don’t even need to say “Women in Tech” anymore. Diversity will be so ingrained in the tech world that it’ll be the norm.

“Maybe in five years, we won’t even be called Women in Tech—we’ll be People in Tech.”

This is the kind of future we should all be striving for, where inclusion is no longer an initiative, but a given.
