AI is changing the skills we need. But who will become tomorrow's experts?

As AI transforms the way we work, organizations are rethinking the skills and capabilities they need to stay competitive. But in the race for efficiency, are we overlooking how future talent will develop?

This was one of the key questions raised at Gothenburg Tech Week Blueprint, where Anna Gulliksen, Advisory Board member of Women in Tech Sweden, joined a roundtable on Competence, Talent and Upskilling.

The discussion explored how AI is reshaping roles, which human capabilities will remain essential, and how organizations can balance upskilling existing employees with bringing in new expertise.

One challenge deserves particular attention: the future of entry-level opportunities.

As AI takes over routine tasks traditionally performed by junior employees, we risk removing important opportunities to learn, gain experience and develop professional judgment.

“AI can make us more productive, but we also need to think long-term. If we remove the opportunities where young professionals develop their skills, where will tomorrow’s experts come from?” reflects Anna Gulliksen.

Critical thinking, creativity, adaptability and human judgment will remain essential. But developing these capabilities requires more than training programmes. It requires experience, mentoring and opportunities to learn through work.

From a Women in Tech perspective, there is also an important inclusion dimension. AI has the potential to open new pathways into tech, but only if organizations actively broaden access to learning, development and career opportunities.

The real opportunity is not simply to redesign jobs around AI, but to rethink how we identify, develop and include talent.

The decisions we make today will shape who gets to contribute to tomorrow’s tech industry.

The roundtable was moderated by Astrid Sjöström from AI Sweden, with Anna Gulliksen, Jessica Laos, Albert Bengtson and Victorine Lançon participating.
